Safety and supervision
Every good program should be glad you asked these questions.
- How are staff and volunteers screened, and are background checks required?
- What is the typical ratio of adults to young people?
- How do you handle check-in, check-out, and authorized pickups?
- What is your plan for injuries, allergies, and emergencies?
Staff and mentors
Relationships are the heart of youth development. Ask how long staff and mentors typically stay, what training they receive, and how mentors are matched with young people. Consistent adults matter more than a long list of activities.
What a typical day looks like
Ask the director to walk you through a normal session from arrival to pickup. Is there time for homework, movement, snacks, and the activity your child is most excited about? Can your child visit or try a session first?
Communication with families
Find out how the program shares schedule changes, cancellations, and concerns — and how quickly you can reach someone. Programs that communicate through one clear channel are easier for busy families to follow than scattered group texts.
Cost, forms, and logistics
Clarify the full cost, what it includes, whether scholarships or payment plans exist, what forms are required, and whether transportation is offered. Ask what happens if your child needs to miss sessions.
